Transfer unit oil seal — replacement
1. Raise and support the vehicle on hoist jackstones.
Left seal
Note: The left seal is between the transaxle and the transfer unit.
2. Remove the transfer unit (see Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) — replacement).
3. Secure the transfer unit and use a sealpuller to remove the left seal between the transfer unit and the transaxle.
4. Carefully install a new seal using a sealinstaller or large socket to a depth of 0.375 to 0.413 in (9.5 to 10.5 mm).
5. Installation is the reverse of removal.Tighten the fasteners to the specifications in this Chapter’s Specifications.
6. Fill the transfer unit with the correct lubricant to the proper level (see Transfer unit lubricant change (AWD models)).
Right seal
7. Drain the transfer unit oil (see Tune-up and routine maintenance).
8. Remove the passenger’s front driveaxle (see Driveaxles — removal and installation).
9. Remove the drive axle bearing bracketfasteners and the bracket.
10. Use a seal puller to remove the left seal between the transfer unit and the transaxle.
11. Carefully install a new seal using a seal installer or large socket to a depth of 0.296 to 0.334 in (7.5 to 8.5 mm).
12. Installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten the fasteners to the specifications in this Chapter’s Specifications.
13. Fill the transfer unit with the correct oil to the proper level.
Output shaft
14. The output shaft seal is part of the pinion assembly and should be serviced by a qualified technician as special tools and procedures are necessary to ensure the pinion is properly set up after removal.
