Fuel pressure relief procedure
Warning: Gasoline is extremely flammable. See Fuel system warnings in Section Fuel and exhaust systems.
1. Remove the fuel filler cap — this will relieve any pressure built up in the tank.
2. Remove the center console box (see Center console — removal and installation).
3. Locate the fuel pump/sending unit electrical connector and unplug it (the harness will exit through a grommet in the vehicle’s floor) (see illustration).
i. 3 Disconnect the fuel pump electrical connector
4. Start the engine and allow it to run until it stops (it should only run for a few seconds, or it might not even start). Turn the ignition switch Off and disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery before working on the fuel system (see Engine electrical systems).
5. The fuel system pressure is now relieved. Place a shop rag around any fitting to be disconnected to catch the residual fuel as it bleeds off. Dispose of the fuel-soaked rag in an approved safety container.
6. When you’re finished working on the fuel system, reconnect the fuel pump/sending unit harness connector and connect the negative cable to the battery. 7. Performing this procedure may cause a Diagnostic Trouble Code to set (fuel system too lean). If this happens, refer to Emissions and engine control systems and erase the trouble code.
