Powertrain mounds — check and replacement
1. The powertrain mounts seldom require attention, but broken or deteriorated mounts should be replaced immediately or the added strain placed on the driveline components may cause damage or wear.
Check
2. During the check, the engine must be raised slightly to remove the weight from the mounts.
3. Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jack stands. Remove the splash shields under the engine and position a jack under the engine oil pan. Place a large block of wood between the jack head and the oil pan, then carefully raise the engine just enough to take the weight off the mounts. Do not position the wood block under the drain plug.
Warning: DO NOT place any part of your body under the engine when it’s supported only by a jack!
4. Check the mounts to see if the rubber is cracked, hardened or separated from the bushing in the center of the mount.
5. Check for relative movement between the mount plates and the engine or frame (use a large screwdriver or pry bar to attempt to move the mounts). If movement is noted, lower the engine and tighten the mount fasteners.
6. Rubber preservative should be applied to the mounts to slow deterioration.
Replacement
7. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery (see Engine electrical systems), then raise the vehicle and support it securely on jack stands (if not already done). Support the engine as described in Step 3.
Passenger’s side engine mount
8. Working below the vehicle, remove the nut securing the right-side mount to the engine bracket (see illustration).
i.8 Working from below, remove the passenger’s side engine mount-to-engine bracket retaining nut (A). (B) are the lower bracket-to-engine block bolts
9. Working above in the engine compartment, remove the remaining nut and bolts securing the right-side mount to the engine bracket (see illustration). If the vehicle is equipped with ABS brakes, it will be necessary to remove the ABS actuator and bracket first to allow access to the mount (see Brakes).
i.9 Working from above, remove the passenger’s side engine mount fasteners
10. Detach the mount from the vehicle.
11. Installation is the reverse of removal. Use thread locking compound on the mount bolts/ nuts and be sure to tighten them securely.
Caution: Be sure to bleed the brakes properly if the vehicle is equipped with an Antilock Brake System (see Brakes).
Front and rear transaxle mounts
12. Working up through the holes in the crossmember, remove the mount-to-crossmember retaining bolts (see illustration).
i. 12 Working from below, remove the transaxle mount fasteners
13. Remove the through-bolt securing the mount to the transaxle bracket and detach the mount from the vehicle (see illustration).
i. 13 Remove the transaxle mount through-bolt — front mount shown, rear mount similar
1 Through-bolt and flag nut (hold the nut and turn the bolt)
2 Mount bracket-to-transaxle bolts
14. Installation is the reverse of removal. Use thread locking compound on the mount bolts/ nuts and be sure to tighten them securely.
Driver’s side transaxle mount
15. Remove the air filter housing (see Fuel and exhaust systems).
16. Remove the nuts and bolts securing the mount to the transaxle (see illustration).
i. 16 Driver’s side transaxle mount fasteners
1 Mount-to-transaxle bolts
2 Through-bolt and nut
3 Mount bracket-to-chassis bolts
17. Remove the through-bolt securing the mount to the chassis bracket and remove the mount from the vehicle
18. Installation is the reverse of removal. Use thread locking compound on the mount bolts/ nuts and be sure to tighten them securely.
