Battery — removal and installation

1. If equipped, remove the fasteners securing the battery top cover, then remove the cover and set it aside.

2. Loosen the cable clamp nut and disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal first, then disconnect the cable from the positive battery terminal (see illustration).

3. Remove the battery hold-down clamp front fastener, then unhook the rod from the battery tray at the rear. Position the hold-down clamp and wiring harness aside.

4. Lift out the battery. Be careful — it’s heavy. Remove the battery insulator, if equipped.

Note: Battery straps and handlers are available at most auto parts stores for reasonable prices. They make it easier to remove and carry the battery.

5. If you are replacing the battery, make sure you get one that’s identical, with the same dimensions, amperage rating, cold cranking rating, terminal polarity arrangement, etc.

6. To remove the battery tray, remove the bolts attaching it to the vehicle’s body (see illustrations).
