Powertrain Control Module (PCM) — removal and installation
Warning: The models covered by this manual are equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), more commonly known as airbags. Always disable the airbag system before working in the vicinity of any airbag system components to avoid the possibility of accidental deployment of the airbag, which could cause personal injury (see Chassis electrical system).
Caution: To avoid electrostatic discharge damage to the PCM, handle the PCM only by its case. Do not touch the electrical terminals during removal and installation. If available, ground yourself to the vehicle with an anti-static ground strap, available at computer supply stores.
Note: The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) may also be referred to as the Engine Control Module (ECM) or Engine Control Unit (ECU).
1. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) is located in the engine compartment on the driver’s side, next to the relay and fuse box.
2. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal (see Engine electrical systems).
3. Remove the air filter housing, if necessary, to provide working clearance (see Fuel and exhaust systems).
4. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the PCM (see illustration). Release the lever safety tabs, and at the same time, pull the levers
outward. Remove the PCM mounting bolts.

5. Carefully remove the PCM. Transfer the mounting brackets onto the new PCM, if necessary.
Caution: Avoid any static electricity damage to the computer by grounding yourself to the body before touching the PCM and using a special anti-static pad to store the PCM on / in once it is removed.
6. Installation is the reverse of removal.
7. The TRANSAXLE COMPENSATION CODE and RESET MEMORY procedures (A/T initialization) must be performed by a qualified technician or repair facility.
8. Perform the idle initialization procedure (see Fuel and exhaust systems, Throttle body — check, replacement and initialization).
