Parking brake cables — replacement
Warning: These models are equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), more commonly known as airbags. Always disable the airbag system before working in the vicinity of any airbag system component to avoid the possibility of accidental deployment of the airbag(s), which could cause personal injury (see Chassis electrical system).
Warning: Do not use a memory saving device to preserve the PCM or radio memory when working on or near airbag system components.
1. Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery (see Engine electrical systems).
Equalizer-to-parking brake cable
2. Loosen the rear wheel lug nuts, raise the rear of the vehicle and support it securely on jack stands. Block the front wheels. Remove the wheel. Make sure the parking brake is completely released, then remove the brake drum.
3. Remove the parking brake shoes (see Parking brake shoes — inspection and replacement) and disconnect the cable from the parking brake lever.
4. Remove the cable retaining bolt from the backing plate and pull the cable through the backing plate.
5. Unbolt the cable clamps from the trailing arm and floor pan.
6. Remove the center console (see Body).
7. Unbolt the SRS control unit and remove the center console rear mounting bracket.
8. Detach the cable(s) from the equalizer, then push the cables through the floor pan.
9. Installation is the reverse of removal. Apply a light coat of grease to the portion of the cable end that engages with the equalizer.
10. Adjust the parking brake (see Parking brake — adjustment).
Equalizer-to-brake lever cable
11. Remove the center console (see Body).
12. With the lever in the down (off) position, remove the locknut and the adjusting nut (see Parking brake — adjustment).
13. Unbolt the SRS control unit and remove the center console rear mounting bracket.
14. Disconnect the cable from the equalizer.
15. Remove the bolts and detach the parking brake lever along with the cable.
16. Bend the cable retaining claw up and detach the cable from the lever.
17. Installation is the reverse of removal.
Apply a light coat of grease to the portion of the cable end that engages with the equalizer.
18. Adjust the parking brake (see Parking brake — adjustment).
