Shift lock system — description, check and replacement
Warning: These models are equipped with airbags. Always disable the airbag system before working in the vicinity of any airbag system component to avoid the possibility of accidental deployment of the airbag(s), which could cause personal injury (see Chassis electrical system).
Description
1. The shift lock system prevents the shiftlever from being shifted out of Park or Neutral until the brake pedal is applied. It also prevents the key from being removed from the ignition lock cylinder until the shift lever is placed in the Park position.
2. The shift lock control solenoid and ECUare part of the shift lever assembly and not serviced separately. The key interlock solenoid is attached to the ignition lock cylinder housing.
Functional check
3. If the components are not functioningproperly, check the shift lever assembly electrical operation (see Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor — replacement and testing).
Shift lock operation
4. Move the shift lever to the Park position.
5. Turn the ignition switch to the Off position.
6. Check that the shift lever cannot bemoved to any position other than the Park position.
7. Turn the ignition switch On, depress thebrake pedal and check that the shift lever can be moved to other positions.
Shift lock release button operation
8. Move the shift lever with the shift lock release button pressed, check that the lever can be moved to any position other than Park. If this cannot be done, check the shift lever assembly.
Note: Do not disconnect the shift lock control ECU connector.
Key interlock operation
9. Turn the ignition switch to the on position.
10. Depress the brake pedal and move the shift lever to any position other than Park.
11. Check that the ignition switch cannot be turned to the Off position.
12. Move the shift lever to the Park position, turn the ignition switch to the Off position, and check that the key can be removed.
Replacement
Shift lock solenoid and ECU
13. The shift lock control solenoid and ECU are part of the shift lever assembly, and not serviceable separately. If either of these components are diagnosed as faulty, the shift lever assembly must be replaced (see Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor — replacement and testing).
Key interlock solenoid
14. Remove the steering column covers (see Steering column covers — removal and installation).
15. Locate the key interlock solenoid attached to the steering lock actuator and disconnect the electrical connector (see illustration).
i. 15 Locating the key interlock solenoid
16. Remove the single screw and remove the solenoid from the lock actuator (see illustration).
17. Installation is the reverse of removal.
18. Verify proper operation.
