Shift lever assembly — check, removal and installation
Check
1. Set the parking brake and block thewheels to prevent the vehicle from rolling.
2. Remove the center console (see Center console — removal and installation).
3. Access the shift lever assembly 8-pinelectrical connector. Do not disconnect the connector.
4. Using a digital volt/ohm meter (DVOM)set to measure voltage, connect the Black lead to the vehicle body (ground) and use the Red lead to measure at the following terminals by back-probing from the rear of the connector (see illustration). If the results are not as shown, replace the shift lever assembly.
i. 4 Shift lever assembly connector terminals
Terminal No. | Condition | DVOM reading |
1 (ACC) | Ignition ON | 11 to 14 volts |
Ignition in ACC | 11 to 14 volts
Ignition OFF | Less than 1 volt
8 (STP) | Brake pedal pressed | 11 to 14 volts |
Brake pedal released | Less than 1 volt
5 (KLS+) | Ignition in ACC and shift lever in Park | Less than 1 volt |
Ignition in ACC and shift lever NOT in Park | 11 to 14 volts
4 (IG) | Ignition ON | 11 to 14 volts |
Ignition OFF | Less than 1 volt |
Removal
5. Set the parking brake and block thewheels to prevent the vehicle from rolling.
6. Unscrew the shift knob to remove it.
7. Remove the center console (see Center console — removal and installation).
8. Place the shift lever in Neutral and carefully pry the shift cable end from the shift lever assembly.
9. Pull up on the cable stopper and hold while rotating the knob 180 degrees counterclockwise (see illustration) to remove the cable from the shift lever assembly bracket
i. 9 Disconnect the shift cable
1 Pry the cable off
2 Pull up the white stopper
3 Hold stopper up while rotating the knob 180 degrees
10. Disconnect both connectors and the harness clips and secure the harness to the side of the shift lever housing
11. Remove the four bolts securing the shift lever assembly to the floor, and remove the shift lever assembly from the vehicle (see illustration).

Installation
12. Installation is reverse of removal. Ensure the transaxle and the shift lever are still in Neutral.
13. To attach the cable to the shift lever assembly bracket, insert the cable, rotate the knob 180 degrees clockwise and press the lock down. The knob may need to be rotated more or less to get the lock to slide down.
14. Press the shift cable end over the shift lever stud until it clicks into place.
15. Adjust the shift cable (see Camshaft Position (CMP) sensors — replacement).
16. Verify the transaxle shift into all positions properly and the shift lock/key interlock operate correctly (see Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor — replacement and testing).
