Shift cable — removal, installation and adjustment
Warning: These models are equipped with airbags. Always disable the airbag system before working in the vicinity of any airbag system component to avoid the possibility of accidental deployment of the airbag(s), which could cause personal injury (see Chassis electrical system).
Removal and installation
1. If helpful for access, raise the front of the vehicle and support it securely on jack stands.
2. Remove the center console (see Body).
3. Remove the cable from the shift leverassembly and bracket as described in Shift lever assembly — check, removal and installation.
4. Remove the air filter housing (see Air filter housing — removal and installation).
5. Remove the nut and disconnect the shiftcable from the transaxle shift lever (see illustration).
6. Remove the clip and detach the shiftcable housing from the bracket on the transaxle (see illustration).

7. Remove the two bolts attaching the shiftcable grommet to the vehicle body (see illustration).

8. Remove the cable through the enginecompartment.
9. Installation is the reverse of removal.
10. Adjust the shift cable.
Adjustment
11. Shift the shift lever to the Neutral position.
12. Locate the cable adjuster in the center console. Slide the white cover toward the front of the vehicle, and pull out the green lock piece.
13. Gently pull the shift cable rod toward the rear of the vehicle by hand to pull the cable tight (see illustration).

1. Slide the cover toward the front
2. Pull out the lock
3. Pull the shift cable rod toward the rear of the vehicle
14. Press the lock piece into the adjuster case and lock it, then slide the cover back into place (see illustration).

Note: Slide the cover past the protrusion of the lock piece.
15. Check the operation of the transaxle in each shift lever position (try to start the engine in each gear — the starter should operate in the Park and Neutral positions only).
