Driveaxle oil seal replacement

1. Oil leaks frequently occur due to wear ofthe drive axle oil seals and/or the speedometer drive gear oil seal and 0-rings. Replacement of these seals is relatively easy, since the repairs can be performed without removing the transaxle from the vehicle.

2. The drive axle oil seals are located on thesides of the transaxle, where the inner ends of the drive axles are splined into the differential side gears. If you suspect that a drive axle oil seal is leaking, raise the vehicle and support it securely on jack stands. If the seal is leaking, you’ll see lubricant on the side of the transaxle, below the seal.

3. Remove the drive axle (see Driveline).

4. On 4WD models, if servicing the passenger’s seal, remove the transfer unit (see Transfer unit — removal and installation).

5. On all models, using a screwdriver orprybar, carefully pry the oil seal out of the transaxle bore (see illustration).
